The best time to visit Uganda and especially Lake Mburo National Park is at the beginning of the rainy seasons in March and October. As the grass never grows very long in Mburo it is always nice to visit the park. The rainy season does not mean it rains all the time, there might be a downpour, but then the sun will come out again and the air will be fresh and clean with visibility of over 100 km possible. We can sometimes see the Rwenzori Mountains over 140 km away.
Lake Mburo National Park lies in a rain shadow between Lake Victoria and the Rwenzori Mountains, and receives an average of 800 mm of rain a year. Being near the equator, the rainfall pattern is bimodal, with the long rains occurring from March to June, and the short rains from September to December. The rains are rather erratic and unpredictable, but most rain tends to fall in April and November.
The average recorded temperature is 26° C with variations ranging from 14° C at night to 32° C on a very hot day. July and August are the hottest months, but January and February can also be very hot. The main factor determining the temperature is not the time of year; it is more whether it is cloudy or not.
The coldest temperatures occur after a cloudy day followed by clear night. This normally happens in the rainy season with mist rising out of the valleys in the morning.
Please make sure you bring warm clothes as it can be quite chilly in the evening or on a rainy day.
